This past weekend saw the Senior Men make their first trip to the iconic Sutton Park for the National 12-stage Road Relays.
Following a successful showing at the Southern 12-stage Road Relays in Milton Keynes last month, the Gees qualified for this historic event that features some of the best clubs in the country.
Almost perfect conditions greeted the team on arrival with only a mild wind to contend with as well as the ‘undulating’ lap around Sutton Park and a number of ferociously competitive teams.
As the name suggest the event is made up of 12-stages, alternating between long legs of c5.3 miles and short legs of almost 3.2 miles, both legs follow a similar route with the dreaded ‘out and back’ stretch to challenge those fortunate enough to be running the long legs.
As midday arrived, almost 70 teams lined-up ready for a fast and furious start downhill before heading off into the park for the first long leg. John Sanderson continued his excellent run of form and led the Gees out in style, returning in 3rd place and clocking the 11th fastest long leg of the day! The teams strong start was backed up well by George Dollner on the first short leg, bringing Guildford back in 4th place.
As the day progressed, the lead changed hands a number of times as the strength and depth of teams came to the surface, whilst the Guildford men continued to work hard on each leg and deliver an excellent debut performance with Brian O’Kane bringing the team home in 47th place, safely inside the 5 hour mark that team manager Terry had loosely targeted at the start.
The team have vowed to work hard over the coming months ready for the shorter 6-stage Road Relays in the Autumn, where hopefully the Gees can make a return to Sutton Park and begin to work their way up the results.
