London Marathon

After scorching hot temperatures last year, the weather was considerably better for runners this year and offered up cool breezy conditions for the 2019 London Marathon.  There were 16 GGAC athletes running this year, a great turn-out with some brilliant performances.

Tom Griffiths ran an outstanding 2:31:40 to be the fastest Gee of the day, setting an almost 6 minute PB in the process.  Mark Higgs (who recently returned from Australia this year) also ran a big PB of 2:38:03.  Just behind Tom and Mark were Rob Ingoldby and Robin Boon, aiming to break 2:45 and 3hrs for the first time.

Rob gave a summary of his day after hitting his target in 2:44:40 - "Me and Ben Friend had a relatively relaxed start in the small Yellow assembly area.  I managed to get to the start about 4 people back from the front and we all went off at a typically too-fast pace.  After about half a mile there were the first set of toilets where I had a quick 30 second stop as a result of all the Lucozade drink on offer while waiting for the start.  After that it was fairly smooth sailing with the overcast and cool temperature helping me go through halfway on target to be just 10 seconds under 2:45.  I was able to tick off the miles around 6:15 pace, while passing a male bride and a 40 year old Cub Scout at Canary Wharf!  I saw Matt McDaniel around mile 24, and even though he was not having his best run he still had the energy to give me encouragement as I went past, great G&G teamwork!  A good day for me personally with a 50 minute improvement on my last London Marathon, and PBs galore elsewhere in the team.  Well done Gees! "

Robin also had a great day, running 2:58:38 - Robin said "It has taken me 3 years and 21 marathons to finally achieve a sub 3.  Seriously I would like to thank everybody at the club for their support.  Special shout out to Matt L, Marc, the Ben's, Al and Andy B. "

Other highlights from the day were:

Paula Aldred running 3:44:33 in her first marathon
Ben Evans running 3:29:00 - great to see you back at London Ben!
Jenni Friar finished in 3:47:08
Ben Friend running a PB 2:55:46
Martine Goddard ran 5:25:45
Susanna Harrison with another good run high in the V55 category - 3:14:35
Matt McDaniel not having his best run, but still running 2:45:26!
Cecilia Siruffo racing another marathon after having done Boston, 3:21:17
Andrew Taylor running 3:20:28 despite limited training
Andrea Thomas nicely under 3:30 in 3:27:33

Simon Goldsworthy was again guiding a visually impaired runner - just for the 2nd half of the race, who ended up finishing in an excellent 2:46!

And finally we wish Eleanor Harrison a speedy recover after she pulled out unwell.
