European Masters Athletics Championships in Venice Italy Sept
Congratulations to Virginia Mitchell on a very successful European Championships where she fiinished up as a triple European Champion.
Gold in 400m 64.73
Gold in 800m 2.26.29
It has been a very tough build up for Virginia since she has been injured all season and done most of her training on the bike and in the gym with minimal track training or racing.
Virginia's aim was to get a gold in 400m knowing that she was clear favourite for this one and though the time was not as fast as she wanted, excellent result.
In the 800m, she raced Clare Elms who won everything in their age group from 1500m upwards. There was keen interest in this race since they have not raced each other since Virginia beat her at the World Indoors in Torun in March in a new World Record 2.22.34.
So, it was very much a battle of the sprinter vs the middle distance runner and Clare tried to get past Virginia several times but Virginia stayed ahead and then put in a burst off the final bend to take the gold again.
Also, Gold and World Record in 4 x 400m relay 4.27.33
Tony Mitchell also competed and has been training so well this season. Having won the British Champs, he had to pull out from the 300m hurdles due to piriformis injury.
But, he too got a bronze in the 4x100m and the team was DQ in the 4 x 400 on technicality which was not even relevant due to mixed age groups.
A big thank you to Jonty Mitchell for the photos.
